Lisa Couperthwaite
Ph.D., C.Psych.
I am a Clinical Psychologist registered in Ontario with expertise in care, disability management, and systems improvement in relation to occupational mental health disability, prevention, and return to work (RTW). I have a special interest in mitigating the potential negative effects of occupational trauma (e.g., OSI, PTSD) and optimising posttraumatic growth and resilience for those working in high trauma sectors. I incorporate evidence-based approaches in my work. In my private practice, I largely provide psychodiagnostic assessment and can assist with providing useful clinical information to help problem solve various types of complex situations involving WSIB claims, including working with lawyers and paralegals assisting with appeals to ARO and/or WSIAT. I also provide subject matter expertise, leadership, and consultation services on mental health disability management to organizations, including needs assessments towards establishing mental health wellness and RTW programs. I also provide tailored training and workshops on topics related to workplace mental health, disability, and rehabilitation. I previously worked as clinician-trainer for the MHCC / Department of National Defence’s Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR) program and assisted with the developing the paramedic adaptation and initial pilot training to paramedics across Ontario.
When working as a consultant to organisations, I provide input on supporting staff in ways that can shorten disability claim duration and costs. For example, I help provide organisations with individualised and creative solutions to prevent occupational mental health injuries, build resilient peer support teams, forge referral networks with providers for timely intervention, navigate systems issues and barriers, and optimise RTW programming. Whether in my work or on a more personal level, I am devoted to collaborating together with other mental health professionals, organisations and community members to create communities of support, eradicate mental health stigma, increase access to effective prevention programs and treatment interventions and bolster awareness and engagement in activities that increase overall well-being and resilience.
