Advanced Interpretation of the MMPI-3 Validity Scales

This advanced workshop is intended for psychologists already familiar with the MMPI-3. The conceptual foundations for using the MMPI-3 Validity Scales will be discussed first, followed by a description of their development and the empirical research that guides and supports their interpretation. Cases illustrating validity scale interpretation will be presented next, followed by a discussion of potential challenges to forensic use of the MMPI-3 Validity Scales. The workshop will conclude with a series of case studies of using the MMPI-3 in disability evaluations.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this workshop attendees will be able to:
1. Describe the conceptual foundations of the MMPI-3 Validity Scales.
2. Trace the evolution of the MMPI-3 Validity Scales.
3. Discuss the empirical literature available to guide and support interpretation of MMPI-3 Validity Scale findings.
4. Interpret the MMPI-3 Validity Scales following the standard Interpretive guidelines.
5. Discuss and resolve potential challenges to using the MMPI-3 Validity Scales in forensic evaluations.
6. Use the MMPI-3 Validity Scales in disability evaluations.

 

The workshop will incorporate two 15 minute refreshment breaks, and a 1 hour lunch break.

This workshop will be presented by the MMPI-3's lead author, Dr. Yossi Ben Porath.

 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr. Yossef Ben-Porath, PhD, ABPP, is a Professor of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University.

He received his doctoral training at the University of Minnesota and has been involved extensively in MMPI research for the past 36 years.

He is a co-developer of the MMPI-3, MMPI-2-RF, and MMPI-A-RF and co-author of test manuals, books, book chapters, and articles on the MMPI instruments.

Dr. Ben-Porath is a board-certified psychologist (American Board of Professional Psychology-Clinical) whose clinical practice involves supervision of assessments at Kent State’s Psychological Clinic, consultation to agencies that screen candidates for public safety positions and provision of consultation and expert witness services in forensic cases.
