Brian Levitt

Psy.D., C.Psych., C-CAT (MB), CMLE (ON)

Dr. Brian Levitt, Psy.D., C.Psych. is a registered psychologist with areas of competence in rehabilitation and clinical psychology, as designated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario (Certificate No. 3700). He is a partner at Kaplan & Levitt Psychologists, a psychology clinic that assesses and treats patients through a number of systems, including auto insurance and WSIB. Dr. Levitt’s doctoral degree is in Clinical Psychology, with a minor in Health Psychology. He also has a Master of Science in Community Counselling, with specialized training in vocational assessment and counselling. In 2010 he completed a postgraduate diploma program (DESS) in Insurance Medicine and Medicolegal Expertise through the University of Montreal Faculty of Medicine. In 2022 he earned a postgraduate certificate in Civil Forensic Assessment through Palo Alto University, having completed comprehensive coursework taught entirely by leading board certified forensic psychologists.

Dr. Levitt’s doctoral training included assessment, diagnosis and treatment of severe mental and behavioural disorders in private and public psychiatric inpatient hospital settings, as well as sheltered workshops. He also performed disability assessments for patients with severe mental disorders applying for Social Security Disability. As a clinical psychologist, he worked in several chronic care facilities, assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with severe psychological disorders, including psychotic and severe mood disorders.

Upon immigrating to Canada in 2000, Dr. Levitt respecialized in rehabilitation psychology. He since has performed hundreds of psychological disability assessments in relation to MVA, WSIB, and other personal injury contexts. He was on the FSCO roster for Post-104 and Catastrophic disability assessors, and has performed hundreds of Catastrophic, Post-104 disability and psychovocational assessments. He has published scholarly works with respect to catastrophic impairment, and created educational modules addressing catastrophic impairment evaluation for the Canadian Academy of Psychologists in Disability Assessment and Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators. He is currently a lecturer and examiner for the Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation program, a joint program carried out by the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators and the Canadian Academy of Psychologists in Disability Assessment. In 2022, Dr. Levitt was granted lifetime status in the CSME/CAPDA Medicolegal Expertise and Catastrophic Impairment Evaluation Certification programs.

Dr. Levitt has been asked by the College of Psychologists of Ontario to provide expert opinion regarding complaints made against psychologists. He was invited in 2014 to consult to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science in Washington, DC on the use of performance and symptom validity testing in Canadian disability benefits systems and the implications for Social Security Administration Disability Determinations. Dr. Levitt delivered the 2010 Keynote Address to the British Psychological Society’s Division of Counselling Psychology on the intersection of psychological assessment and the law. He has edited two books on the application of humanistic theory to psychological treatment, and has also published book chapters and articles in this area. His most recent book addresses what gets in the way of more fully understanding patients in all aspects of assessment and treatment in psychology. He is also on the editorial board of Psychological Injury and Law and an ad hoc reviewer for Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies, which are peer reviewed journals. In 2015 Dr. Levitt received the Canadian Academy of Psychological Disability Assessors Founders’ Award for exemplary service to CAPDA. He served on the CAPDA board for six years, including two years as chair of the Standards and Guidelines Committee and two years as President. He has also served on the Ontario Psychological Association’s Sub-Committee on Auto Insurance since 2004. In 2025 he received the Ontario Psychological Association’s Ester Cole Lifetime Leadership Award. He has been accepted as an expert witness in Ontario courts, arbitrations and tribunals.
